The McLaren driver narrowly beat fellow driver and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the championship lead from his teammate by a single point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, topped the Melbourne-born driver by a mere 0.023s. Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before the sprint shootout set to begin at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in the points battle, lying 36 points behind Norris, was classified in 17th place as his Red Bull team opted for a unique setup. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to go off, albeit lightly, when he rotated at Turn Four during the early running. The Japanese slid over the exit kerbs before spinning across the run-off area, and was blessed to escape with just a slight brush of the barrier. Ferrari's the seven-time champion also spun, at the final moments of the practice, spinning around through the high-speed Mergulho turn leading to the last turn on to the pit straight. The veteran finished practice in P19, trailing teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were well clear of the remaining drivers, with the German's Sauber third fastest, over half a second slower than Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was in fourth, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
